The Organizing Committee of the International Descent of the Sella announced this Monday the suspension of this year's edition due to the coronavirus health crisis, a decision that only finds precedent in the Civil War and post-war years and which postponed until August 2021 what was to be the 90th anniversary of the Descent and 75 of its River Train.
«The decision is made with great regret, but from responsibility and commitment due to the pandemic. We are forced to take it in such a special edition as this to preserve everyone's health and to collaborate with the authorities and medical professionals who fight against Covid-19, ”argued CODIS in the official statement.
The Asturian event, which was to be held next August 8 is one of the most popular sports events in the region and gathers a large crowd of participants and the public, which is why that its suspension has been decided after initially thinking of postponing it until September 5, waiting for the health crisis to improve.
Finally, CODIS opted for the more prudent option and decided to cancel the Fiesta de las Piraguas "to avoid taking unnecessary risks", something that only has a precedent in the entire History of the Descent since the most international sporting event in the Principality was only suspended during the Civil War and the Spanish Post-War (1936-1943).
The organization, which is already focused on offering «an extraordinary Sella in 2021», took advantage of the announcement to thank the support received during all these months of work by institutions, sponsors and collaborators, who did everything possible to try to get the test ahead despite adversities.
